Probing large distance higher-dimensional gravity with cosmic microwave background measurements.

چکیده
Higher-dimensional gravity theories may manifest themselves not only at short microscopic distances but also at large cosmological scales. We study the constraints that cosmic microwave background measurements set on such large distance modifications of the gravitational potential.

Brane World Cosmic String Interaction
It is shown that brane world gravity produces an attractive force between cosmic strings, in contrast to conventional Einstein gravity. This force is sufficient for stable bound states of Type II strings (which normally repel each other) to form. There is a small separation between the strings, giving them a rope-like structure. At astronomical scales these ‘cosmic ropes’ resemble higher windin...
متن کاملSeparating dark physics from physical darkness: Minimalist modified gravity versus dark energy
The acceleration of the cosmic expansion may be due to a new component of physical energy density or a modification of physics itself. Mapping the expansion of cosmic scales and the growth of large scale structure in tandem can provide insights to distinguish between the two origins. Using Minimal Modified Gravity (MMG)—a single parameter gravitational growth index formalism to parametrize modi...
متن کاملOn the Signature of Short Distance Scale in the Cosmic Microwave Background
We discuss the signature of the scale of short distance physics in the Cosmic Microwave Background. In addition to effects which depend on the ratio of Hubble scale H during inflation to the energy scale M of the short distance physics, there can be effects which depend on φ̇/M where φ is the classical background of the inflaton field. Therefore, the imprints of short distance physics on the spe...
متن کاملMicrowave Background Constraints on Cosmological Parameters
We use a high-accuracy computational code to investigate the precision with which cosmological parameters could be reconstructed by future cosmic microwave background experiments. We focus on the two planned satellite missions: MAP and Planck. We identify several parameter combinations that could be determined with a few percent accuracy with the two missions, as well as some degeneracies among...
متن کاملGetting Around Cosmic Variance
Cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies probe the primordial density field at the edge of the observable Universe. There is a limiting precision (“cosmic variance”) with which anisotropies can determine the amplitude of primordial mass fluctuations. This arises because the surface of last scatter (SLS) probes only a finite two-dimensional slice of the Universe. Probing other SLSs observe...
